Chapter 17, Problem 17.59

(choose chapter or problem)

(a) Determine the resistance of a lightbulb marked 100 W @ 120 V. (b) Assuming that the lament is tungsten and has a cross-sectional area of 0.010 mm2, determine the length of the wire inside the bulb when the bulb is operating. (c) Why do you think the wire inside the bulb is tightly coiled? (d) If the temperature of the tungsten wire is 2 600C when the bulb is operating, what is the length of the wire after the bulb is turned off and has cooled to 20C? (See Chapter 10, and use 4.5 106/C as the coefcient of linear expansion for tungsten.)
