Questions & Answers

QUESTION:

Explain and carry out a method for graphing the curve \(x=1+\cos^2 y-\sin^2 y\) using parametric equations and a graphing utility.

ANSWER:

Solution 87AE

Step 1 of  2:

The given curve is : x = 1 +

We know that ,  = cos(2y)

Therefore , the curve is : x = 1+ cos(2y).

Let us consider , y = p , then  x = 1+ cos(2p)

Therefore , the parametric equations of the given curve is : y = p , and  x = 1+ cos(2p) .
