Chapter 5, Problem 90P

(choose chapter or problem)

When solid quartz “dissolves” in water, it combines with water molecules in the reaction.

\(\mathrm{SiO}_{2}(\mathrm{~s})+2 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}(\mathrm{l}) \longleftrightarrow \mathrm{H}_{4} \mathrm{SiO}_{4}(\mathrm{aq}) .\)

a) Use this data in the back of this book to compute the amount of silica dissolved in waler in equilibrium with solid quartz, at \(25^{\circ} \mathrm{C}\).

b) Use the van’t Hoff equation (below Problem) to compute the amount of silica dissolved in water in equilibrium with solid quartz at \(100^{\circ} \mathrm{C}\).
