Chapter 5, Problem 5.34

(choose chapter or problem)

Jones figures that the total number of thousandsof miles that an auto can be driven before it wouldneed to be junked is an exponential random variablewith parameter 120 . Smith has a used car thathe claims has been driven only 10,000 miles. IfJones purchases the car, what is the probabilitythat she would get at least 20,000 additional milesout of it? Repeat under the assumption that thelifetime mileage of the car is not exponentially distributed, but rather is (in thousands of miles) uniformlydistributed over (0, 40).
