Chapter 8, Problem 8.12

(choose chapter or problem)

We have 100 components that we will put in use ina sequential fashion. That is, component 1 is initiallyput in use, and upon failure, it is replacedby component 2, which is itself replaced upon failureby component 3, and so on. If the lifetimeof component i is exponentially distributed withmean 10 + i/10, i = 1, . . . , 100, estimate the probabilitythat the total life of all components willexceed 1200. Now repeat when the life distributionof component i is uniformly distributed over(0, 20 + i/5), i = 1, . . . , 100.
