Problem 104AE

We can use Hess's law to calculate enthalpy changes that cannot be measured. One such reaction is the conversion of methane to ethylene:

2 CH4(g) — C2H4(g) + H2(g)

Calculate the AH° for this reaction using the following thermochemical data:

CH4(g) + 2 02 (g) — C02(g) + 2 H2O(0 AH° = -890.3 kJ

C2H4(g) + H2(g) — C2H6(g) AH° = -136.3 kJ

2 H2(g) + 02(g) — 2 H2O(0 AH° = -571.6 kJ

2 C2H6(g) + 7 02(g) -»■ 4 C02(g) + 6 H20(/) AH° =-3120.8 kJ
