QUESTION:

The diagram that follows represents a molecular view of a process occurring at an electrode in a voltaic cell.

(a) Does the process represent oxidation or reduction? (b) Is the electrode the anode or cathode? (c) Why are the atoms in the electrode represented by larger spheres than the ions in the solution? [Section 20.3]

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3

(a)

The first element in any group can create pi bonds more easily. Because little atoms can approach each other more intimately, this trend is partially attributable to size. As a result, for the first member in each group, the overlap of  orbitals, which results in the formation of pi bonds, is more effective.
