Problem 20CQ

The hat of a jogger running at constant velocity falls off the back of his head. Draw a sketch showing the path of the hat in the jogger’s frame of reference. Draw its path as viewed by a stationary observer.

ANSWER:

Solution 20CQ:

Step 1 of 2:

The jogger was running at a constant velocity and his hat falls off. We have to draw the path of the hat in both the jogger’s frame of reference and in the frame of reference of a stationary observer.

In the frame of reference of the jogger, the hat falls in a straight path downwards.

This is because, the hat was also in the same velocity as the jogger and it will not change it’s horizontal velocity as there is no force or acceleration in the horizontal direction.
