Problem 6CQ

Problem 6CQ

Give an example in which density is used to identify the substance composing an object. Would information in addition to average density be needed to identify the substances in an object composed of more than one material?

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution

Step 1

To find the substance of an object by its density equation and comparing the results to the given densities in the table.  for an unknown metal. Where  is density m is the mass of the metal and V is the volume. To find the volume by dropping an object into a graduated cylinder containing a volume of the water and measuring the new volume. To find the mass of the metal by reading on a scale. By dividing these values and compare with density to a list of known densities. Objects with same volume but with different mass have different densities.

Yes, the average density would be needed to identify the substances in an object composed of more than one material.
