Consider a pendulum consisting of a bob attached by a massless rigid rod to a frictionless pivot that swings in a plane. Assuming no resistance or external forcing, the angular displacement of the pendulum may be approximated by the equation u_ + v0 2 u = 0, where v0 2 = g / , / is the length of the rod, and g = 9.8 m>s2 is the acceleration due to gravity (see Exercise 47). Assume a pendulum of length / = 0.98 m is lifted 0.2 radian from its vertical equilibrium position and released with no initial velocity. Find the angular displacement of the pendulum at all times after it is released. Graph and describe the motion of the bob, and give its period of oscillation.
