Problem 32CQ
Is a uniform-temperature gas more or less orderly than one with several different temperatures? Which is more structured? In which can heat transfer result in work done without heat transfer from another system?
ANSWER:Solution 32CQ
Step 1 of 2
When a gas has a same temperature throughout its volume, the molecules n the same will possess the same kinetic energies. Thus there will be constant entropy throughout compared to a gas with varying temperatures at different points of its volume.
Hence a gas having a constant temperature throughout will be uniform and more structured compared to one having varying temperatures.
When energy is supplied as an input to the system, there will be an almost uniform rise in kinetic energies and the internal energies of the molecules in the gas with a uniform temperature distribution.
