QUESTION:

During winter, the system of Prob. 10–102E must supply  of heat to the buildings. What is the mass flow rate of air through the air compressor and the system’s total electrical power production in winter?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 6

A combined gas-steam power cycle uses a simple gas turbine for the topping cycle and simple Rankine cycle for the bottoming cycle. The cycle supplies a specified rate of heat to the buildings during winter. The mass flow rate of air and the net power output from the cycle are to be determined.

Assumptions are

1. Steady operating conditions exist.

2. The air standard assumptions are applicable to the Brayton cycle.

3. Kinetic and potential energy changes are negligible.

4. Air is an ideal gas with constant specific heats.

Properties The properties of air at room temperature are  and  (Table A-2Ea).
