The speed of sound in air varies with the variation in the temperature. The supersonic transport aircraft must maintain a speed according to Mach number.

The energy of atoms increases with increase in temperature of air. Sound travels faster in warm air because of the high energy that the atom possesses, it is easy for sound wave to propagate through warm medium.

Also for the aircraft to maintain the constant Mach number the aircraft has to decrease its speed because sound travels slower in cold air.
