How have family, cultural programs and centers, and religious practices shaped your life My family shaped my life by providing me with support and encouragement to do well and be successful. My parents always encouraged me to try my best at everything I did. My family was very supportive of my education and encouraged me to go to college and get a higher education. Growing up, we didn’t go to church that often, but the Lutheran and Catholic schools I attended in middle and high school had an influence on my life. My religious faith helped me learn right from wrong, and has taught me to morally be as good of a person as I can be, and to always treat others with respect. I grew up taking ballet classes, which shaped me physically and helped give me structure and skills to listen to direction. Through informal learning in these areas, has there been a significant contribution to your learning Through informal learning from my family, cultural programs and centers, and religious practices, there has been a major impact on my learning. From informal learning with my family, it has shaped my interests which has lead me to learn more about different things and be open to new ideas. For example, when I was a junior in high school, my dad took me to India to do charity work with orphans. From that experience and meeting different people with different cultures, I became more open minded about different cultures and religions and became more understanding to new concepts. How can culture and/or religious practices impact us socially in our communication and interactions with others Culture and religious practices impact us socially in our interactions with others because they influence they way we think and tell us what’s right and what’s wrong. People from different cultural and religious backgrounds have differences in the way they interact socially. These differences make every culture unique, but one’s culture and one’s religion will heavily impact social interactions between people. For example, at my job as a leasing consultant in student housing, at ASU, (which has a huge international student population) I interact with students from many different cultures and countries. Over the past couple years at my job, I realized how different people from different countries interact socially, and I have learned what is socially acceptable in these different cultures. I think that my experience that I have had from my job has helped me grow socially and will help me in the future. How might the way parents or the community socialize a child to understand his/her own culture differ from the way popular media may portray that culture Parents or the community might socialize a child to understand his/her own culture in a better way than popular media might portray that culture. This is because popular media often uses stereotypes to describe a culture, and it does not accurately portray the reality of that culture.
