Chapter 18, Problem 18.20

(choose chapter or problem)

Slaked lime [Ca(OH)2] is used to soften hard water by removing calcium ions from hard water through the reaction Ca(OH)2(aq) 1 Ca21(aq) 1 2HCO3 2(aq) 88n 2CaCO3(s) 1 2H2O(l) Although CaCO3(s) is considered insoluble, some of it does dissolve in aqueous solutions. Calculate the molar solubility of CaCO3 in water (Ksp 5 8.7 3 1029).
