Solved: The diversity index, from 0 (no diversity) to 100,

Chapter 2, Problem 2.1.75

(choose chapter or problem)

The diversity index, from 0 (no diversity) to 100, measures the chance that two randomly selected people are a different race or ethnicity. The diversity index in the United States varies widely from region to region, from as high as 79 in Hawaii and 68 in California to as low as 10 in Maine and Vermont and 13 in West Virginia. The line graph shows the national diversity index for the United States for four years in the period from 1980 through 2009. The data displayed by the line graph can be described by the mathematical model I 0.6x 34, where I is the national diversity index in the United States x years after 1980. Use this information to solve Exercises 6768. a. Use the line graph to estimate the U.S. diversity index in 2000. b. Use the formula to determine the U.S. diversity index in 2000. How does this compare with your graphical estimate from part (a)?
