The energy required can be estimated from Coulombs law [use the form E 5 9.0 3 109 (Q1Q2/r), using Q 5 1.6 3 10219 C for a proton and r 5 2 3 10215 m for the helium nucleus; the unit for the proportionality constant in Coloumbs law is J m/C2].
