To motivate customers, Puget Sound Energy explored ways to set lower electric rates for off-peak energy use and higher rates for hours of peak consumption. Use the chart above to create a piecewise function where E(h) describes the rates per kilowatt hour charged (written on each bar) and h number of hours since 5 a.m. (Note: Use the times 6 a.m., 10 a.m., 5 p.m., and 9 p.m., to translate into values for h.) The jagged lines behind the bars indicate the actual use of electricity.
