Chapter 4, Problem 18

(choose chapter or problem)

On March 2, 2007, the Boston Globe reported the following: An exabyte is 1 quintillion bytes. In 2006 alone, the human race generated 161 exabytes of digital information. So? Well, thats about 3 million times the information in all the books ever written or the equivalent of 12 stacks of books, each extending more than 93 million miles from Earth to the sun. a. Use scientific notation to represent the amount of digital information generated in 2006. (One quintillion is 1 followed by eighteen zeros.) b. Compare the amount of digital information generated in 2006 with the amount of information in all the books ever written, using orders of magnitude. c. Estimate how many miles of books are needed to hold the equivalent information in 161 exabytes. Express your answer in scientific notation. d. In May 2010, the International Data Corporation predicted the amount of digital information generated in 2010 would grow to 1.2 zettabytes (1021 bytes). Using orders of magnitude, compare this prediction to the amount of digital information generated in 2006
