The Brown University Standard Corpus of Present-Day American English (abbreviated as Brown Corpus) did a comprehensive study of the rank and frequency of use of a million words from a wide variety of print sources, including newspapers, books, and both comedic and academic publications. Heres a small table of the four most frequently used words: Theres a gap in the pattern for ranks 46 (for to, a, and in), but after that the pattern is quite consistent. The following graph shows frequency as a function of rank for the top 2000 words. What function would give the best model: exponential or power? Justify your answer.
