Consider the figure 24.5 provided in the textbook.
An electric field emanates from a positive charge while terminates in a negative charge. Therefore, the direction of the electric field is bound to be from the positive charge towards the negative charge. And a positive test charge placed in an electric field experiences a force having a direction same as that of the field.
