(choose chapter or problem)

One of the classical methods for the determination of the manganesecontent in steel is to convert all the manganese to thedeeply colored permanganate ion and then to measure the absorptionof light. The steel is dissolved in nitric acid, producingthe manganese(II) ion and nitrogen dioxide gas. This solution isthen reacted with an acidic solution containing periodate ion; theproducts are the permanganate and iodate ions. Write balancedchemical equations for both these steps.
