QUESTION:

Problem 6P

Of the following materials, which would you expect to be paramagnetic and which diamagnetic: aluminum, copper, copper chloride (CuCl2), carbon, lead, nitrogen (N2), salt (NaCl), sodium, sulfur, water? (Actually, copper is slightly diamagnetic; otherwise they’re all what you’d expect.)

ANSWER:

Solution 6P:

Step 1 of 2:-

Here we need to identify which of the given materials are paramagnetic and which are diamagnetic.

We know that, paramagnetism is a property which is associated with the material having unpaired electrons. When external magnetic field is removed from the vicinity of the materials, they don’t retain the magnetic properties anymore.

The external magnetic field causes the alignment of the unpaired electrons in such a way that these show their magnetic property.

As we know that Aluminium, copper chloride and sodium have unpaired electrons, they come in the class of paramagnetic materials.

But copper is slightly diamagnetic.
