Chapter , Problem 61

(choose chapter or problem)

(Ill) A heavy steel cable of length i and mass M passes over asmall massless, frictionless pulley, (a) If a length y hangs on oneside of the pulley (so - y hangs on the other side), calculatethe acceleration of the cable as a function of y. (b) Assumingthe cable starts from rest with length y0 on one side of thepulley, determine the velocity Vf at the moment the wholecable has fallen from the pulley, (c) Evaluate Vf for y0 = \L[Hint: Use the chain rule, dv /dt = (dv / dy)(dy / dt), andintegrate.]
