Solved: (II) When discussing moments of inertia,

Chapter , Problem 49

(choose chapter or problem)

(II) When discussing moments of inertia, especially forunusual or irregularly shaped objects, it is sometimes convenientto work with the radius o f gyration, k. This radius isdefined so that if all the mass of the object were concentratedat this distance from the axis, the moment of inertia would bethe same as that of the original object. Thus, the moment ofinertia of any object can be written in terms of its mass Mand the radius of gyration as I = Mk2. Determine theradius of gyration for each of the objects (hoop, cylinder, sphere, etc.) shown in Fig. 10-20.
