Solved: A helium balloon has volume Vq and temperature T0

Chapter , Problem 80

(choose chapter or problem)

A helium balloon has volume Vq and temperature T0 atsea level where the pressure is P0 and the air density is p0.The balloon is allowed to float up in the air to altitude ywhere the temperature is T\. (a) Show that the volumeoccupied by the balloon is then V = Vo(Ti/To)e+cy wherec = Pog/Po = 1.25 X 10-4m-1. (b) Show that the buoyantforce does not depend on altitude y. Assume that the skin ofthe balloon maintains the helium pressure at a constant factorof 1.05 times greater than the outside pressure. [Hint. Assumethat the pressure change with altitude is P = Pq e~cy, as inExample 13-5, Chapter 13.]
