Solved: A Van de Graaff generator (Fig. 23-41) can develop

Chapter , Problem 84

(choose chapter or problem)

A Van de Graaff generator (Fig. 23-41) can develop a verylarge potential difference, even millions of volts. Electronsare pulled off the belt by the high voltage pointed electrodeat A, leaving the belt positively charged. (Recall Example23-5 where we saw that near sharp points the electric fieldis high and ionization can occur.) The belt carries the positivecharge up inside the spherical shell where electrons fromthe large conducting sphere are attracted over to the pointedconductor at B, leaving the outer surface of the conductingsphere positively charged. As more charge is brought up, thesphere reaches extremely high voltage. Consider a Van deGraaff generator with asphere of radius 0.20 m.(a) What is the electricpotential on the surfaceof the sphere whenelectrical breakdownoccurs? (Assume V = 0at r = oo.) (b) What isthe charge on thesphere for the potentialfound in part (a)?
