(II) The betatron, a device used to accelerate electrons

Chapter , Problem 55

(choose chapter or problem)

(II) The betatron, a device used to accelerate electrons tohigh energy, consists of a circular vacuum tube placed in amagnetic field (Fig. 29-48), into which electrons areinjected. The electromagnet produces a field that (1) keepsthe electrons in their circular orbit inside the tube, and(2) increases the speed of the electrons when B changes.(a) Explain how the electrons are accelerated. (SeeFig. 29-48.) (b) In what direction are the electrons movingin Fig. 29-48 (give directions as if looking down fromabove)? (c) Should B increase or decrease to accelerate theelectrons? (d) The magnetic field is actually 60 Hz ac; showthat the electrons can be accelerated only during \ of a cycle(asos)- (During thistime they makehundreds of thousandsof revolutionsand acquire very high energy
