Solved: Show, using the laws of conservation of energy

Chapter , Problem 87

(choose chapter or problem)

Show, using the laws of conservation of energy andmomentum, that for a nuclear reaction requiring energy, the minimum kinetic energy of the bombarding particle (thethreshold energy) is equal to [-Qm pr/(rapr - mb)], whereQ is the energy required (difference in total mass betweenproducts and reactants), mb is the mass of the bombardingparticle, and mpr is the total mass of the products. Assume thetarget nucleus is at rest before an interaction takes place, andthat all speeds are nonrelativistic.
