Chapter , Problem 21

(choose chapter or problem)

(a) Derive an expression for the speed of the electron in the nth Bohr orbit, in terms of Z, n, and the constants k, e, and h. For the hydrogen atom, determine the speed in (b) the n 5 1 orbit and (c) the n 5 2 orbit. (d) Generally, when speeds are less than one-tenth the speed of light, the eff ects of special relativity can be ignored. Are the speeds found in (b) and (c) consistent with ignoring relativistic eff ects in the Bohr model?
