Chapter , Problem 40

(choose chapter or problem)

If a particle with mass m moves with velocity v, its momentum is p = mv. In a game of marbles, a marble with mass 2 grams (g) is shot with velocity 2 meters per second (m/s), hits two marbles with mass 1 g each, and comes to a dead halt. One of the marbles flies off with a velocity of 3 m/s at an angle of 45 to the incident direction of the larger marble, as in Figure 1.R.1. Assuming that the total momentum before and after the collision is the same (according to the law of conservation of momentum), at what angle and speed does the second marble move? 2 m/s 1g p /4 1g 2g 3 m/s figure 1.R.1 Momentum and marbles.
