The flexural rigidity EI of a uniform beam is the product

Chapter , Problem 27

(choose chapter or problem)

The flexural rigidity EI of a uniform beam is the product of its Youngs modulus of elasticity E and the moment of inertia I of the cross section of the beam with respect to a horizontal line l passing through the center of gravity of this cross section. Here I = R [d(x, y)]2dx dy, where d(x, y) = the distance from (x, y) to l and R = the cross section of the beam being considered. (a) Assume that the cross section R is the rectangle 1 x 1, 1 y 2, and l is the line y = 1/2. Find I. (b) Assume the cross section R is a circle of radius 4 and l is the x axis. Find I, using polar coordinates.
