The physical properties and structural characteristics of an organic compound can be understood from its boiling point. The liquid boils when the vapor pressure is similar to its atmospheric pressure.

The boiling point of a particular liquid can alter with the surrounding atmospheric pressure. A liquid found at higher pressure will have greater boiling point than the one found at lower pressure.

Some factors which affect the boiling point are strength of intermolecular forces, length of carbon-carbon chain, branching and polarity.
