In Exercises 17 to 60, solve by using the strategies for solving application problems (see page 86). Speed of Sound in Water Sound travels through sea water 4.62 times as fast as through air. The sound of an exploding mine on the surface of the water and partially submerged reaches a ship through the water 4 seconds before it reaches the ship through the air. How far is the ship from the explosion (to the nearest foot)? Use 1100 feet per second as the speed of sound through air.
