Solar Collector Design A mirrored parabolic trough is used to focus rays of sunlight on a pipe that contains fluid. The heated fluid is sent to a heat exchanger, where steam is created and used to turn a turbine that generates electricity. See a photograph of this solar collector on page 427. The center of the pipe is located at the focus of the parabolic trough. The following figure shows an end view of the trough when the sun is directly overhead.
