CONCEPTUAL Consider a transition from a lower energy state

Chapter , Problem 59

(choose chapter or problem)

CONCEPTUAL Consider a transition from a lower energy state to a higher onethat is, the absorption of a quantum of energy, resulting in an increase in the rotational energy of an molecule (see 58). Suppose such a molecule, initially in its ground rotational state, was exposed to photons, each with an energy equal to three times the energy of its first excited state. (a) Would the molecule be able to absorb this photon energy? Explain why or why not, and if it can, determine the energy level to which it goes. (b) To make a transition from its ground state to its second excited state requires how many times the energy of the first excited state?
