Chapter , Problem 59

(choose chapter or problem)

A uniform nonconducting thin rod of mass and length has a uniform charge per unit length and rotates with angular speed about an axis through one end and perpendicular to the rod. (a) Consider a small segment of the rod of length and charge at a distance from the pivot (Figure 26-39). Show that the average current created by this moving segment is and show that the magnetic moment of this segment is (b) Use this to show that the magnitude of the magnetic moment of the rod is (c) Show that the magnetic moment and angular momentum are related by where is the total charge on the rod.
