A chemical equation for a reaction that obeys the law of conservation of mass is called a balanced equation. It gives the stoichiometric amounts of reactants and products in the reaction system and, therefore, can be used to find the amount of reactants required for the reaction to be complete.

Knowledge of the stoichiometric quantities of the reactants enables to find the limiting reagent of the reaction theoretically. A limiting reagent is a reactant used up first in a reaction, and its concentration will be less than required from the balanced chemical equation. The amount of limiting reagent determines the amount of product formed in the reaction.

Balanced chemical equations are also used to calculate the theoretical or maximum yield of products formed from the given amount of reactants. The percentage yield can be calculated from the theoretical yield if the amount of product formed from the reaction is determined experimentally.
