Questions & Answers
QUESTION:
If the trend of the graph continues, what bond length will have an energy of 200 kJ/mol?
ANSWER:Step 1 of 3
Bond length
Two atoms form a covalent bond by the sharing of electrons. The number of shared pairs determines the distance between the nuclei of the bonded atoms. This distance is called the bond length and depends on the bond order.
Bond length is approximately equal to the sum of the covalent radii of the atoms that share the electrons. Therefore, the bond length is determined at a point of maximum attraction between the atoms.
Bond energy
Two atoms that form a covalent bond have mutual attraction, making the bond stable. When energy is supplied to this bond, the bond breaks if the energy supplied is higher than a minimum value. This minimum value is called bond energy.
It is always a positive value because covalent bonds cannot be broken without energy.
