QUESTION:

What is chemistry?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3

The study of matter is called chemistry. The structure, composition and properties of matter are defined and studied in chemistry. The matter is made up of atoms, and therefore the study of atoms and their reactivity is a major area of chemistry.

Chemistry also includes the study of energy changes during any physical or chemical changes in matter. For example, the energy changes that occur when heating or cooling a substance and the reaction occurring in a substance when mixed with other substances are studied.

Scientists use different methods and instruments to characterize matter in chemistry. Spectroscopy and electroanalytical methods are examples of methods of chemical analysis.

Any substance that has a definite composition is called a chemical. In chemistry, scientists study the properties of chemicals that help them characterize these substances and find their uses. For example, carbon dioxide, water, sucrose are all chemicals.
