Problem 2CQ

Does an odometer in a car measure distance or displacement? Explain.

Solution 2CQ

Step 1 of 1:

An odometer is a device used to measure the distance traveled by a vehicle. It records the distance traveled by car not displacement. The term displacement is a quantity has both magnitude and direction, but the odometer lacks in measuring the direction of the motion.

If we start a trip from a point A to B and come back to A from the odometer doesn’t show zero value as it measures the distance. Whereas it shows the total distance covered. Hence the odometer measures only the distance.

Answer: distance
