Three polarizers, centered on a common axis and with their planes parallel to one another, have transmission axes oriented at angles of u1, u2, and u3 from the vertical, as shown in Figure P24.59. Light of intensity Ii, polarized with its plane of polarization oriented vertically, is incident from the left onto the first polarizer. What is the ratio If /Ii of the final transmitted intensity to the incident intensity if (a) u1 5 45, u2 5 90, and u3 5 0? (b) u1 5 0, u2 5 45, and u3 5 90?
