CE Predict/Explain Two divers run horizontally off the edge of a low cliff. Diver 2 runs with twice the speed of diver 1. (a) When the divers hit the water, is the horizontal distance covered by diver 2 twice as much, four times as much, or equal to the horizontal distance covered by diver 1? (b) Choose the best explanation from among the following:

I. The drop time is the same for both divers.

II. Drop distance depends on t2.

III. All divers in free fall cover the same distance.

Solution 8P

Step 1 of 3

In this problem, Two divers run horizontally off the edge of a low cliff, so we need to find (a) horizontal distance covered by diver 2 (b) choose the explanation given.

Step 2 of 3

Let us consider the horizontal and vertical motions of the divers.

As long as the air friction is neglected there is no acceleration both the divers in the horizontal direction, so the divers will continue moving horizontally at the same speed. And also the time of flight for each diver is same since both the divers falls in similar vertical distance.

Therefore diver 2 will travel twice as much as horizontal distance than diver 1.
