Problem 35P

The force shown in Figure moves an object from x = 0 to x = 0.75 m. (a) How much work is done by the force? (b) How much work is done by the force if the object moves from x = 0.15 m to x = 0.60 m?

Solution 35P

Part (a)

Step 1 of 4:

The force vs position graph is given. We are going to find the work done by the force by moving the object from the point 0 to 0.75 m.

There are three forces acting on the object at different positions. The magnitudes of forces at different positions are given by

F1 = 0.6 N

d1 = 0.25 m - 0 = 0.25 m

F2 = 0.4 N

d2 = (0.5 m - 0.25 m) = 0.25 m

F3 = 0.8 N

d3 = (0.75 m - 0.5 m) = 0.25 m
