Refer to Example 8. The most important zone in the sea from the viewpoint of marine biology is the photic zone, in which photosynthesis takes place. The photic zone ends at the depth where about 1% of the surface light penetrates. In very clear waters in the Caribbean, 50% of the light at the surface reaches a depth of about 13 meters.
