Chapter 9 Problem 94GP

Question

Problem 94GP

An object of mass m undergoes an elastic collision with an identical object that is at rest. The collision is not head-on. Show that the angle between the velocities of the two objects after the collision is 90°.

Solution

Solution 94GP

Step 1 of 5:

Consider an object collides with an another object of the same that is at rest. After the collision, the objects move in the different direction. We are going to show the velocities after the collision is right angle to each other. The kinetic energy and the momentum of the object B are zero before the collision.

The mass of the object = m (both have same mass)

The initial speed of the object A = vA,i

The final speed of the object A = vA,f

The final speed of the object B = vB,f
