Chapter 40, Problem 40.52

(choose chapter or problem)

The penetration distance h in a finite potential well is the distance at which the wave function has decreased to 1>e of the wave function at the classical turning point: c1x = L + h2 = 1 e c1L2 The penetration distance can be shown to be h = U 22m1U0 - E2 The probability of finding the particle beyond the penetration distance is nearly zero. (a) Find h for an electron having a kinetic energy of 13 eV in a potential well with U0 = 20 eV. (b) Find h for a 20.0-MeV proton trapped in a 30.0-MeV-deep potential well
