Massive stars ending their lives in supernova explosions

Chapter 39, Problem 63

(choose chapter or problem)

Massive stars ending their lives in supernova explosions produce the nuclei of all the atoms in the bottom half of the periodic table by fusion of smaller nuclei. This problem roughly models that process. A particle of mass m 5 1.99 3 10226 kg moving with a velocity u S 5 0.500ci ^ collides head-on and sticks to a particle of mass m9 5 m/3 moving with the velocity u S 5 20.500ci ^. What is the mass of the resulting particle?
