Chapter 41, Problem 54(choose chapter or problem)
Why is the following situation impossible? A particle is in the ground state of an infinite square well of length L. A light source is adjusted so that the photons of wavelength l are absorbed by the particle as it makes a transition to the first excited state. An identical particle is in the ground state of a finite square well of length L. The light source sends photons of the same wavelength l toward this particle. The photons are not absorbed because the allowed energies of the finite square well are different from those of the infinite square well. To cause the photons to be absorbed, you move the light source at a high speed toward the particle in the finite square well. You are able to find a speed at which the Doppler-shifted photons are absorbed as the particle makes a transition to the first excited state.
