CE Predict/Explain An electrically neutral object is given a negative charge, (a) In principle, does the object’s mass increase, decrease, or stay the same as a result of being charged? (b) Choose the best explanation from among the following:

I. To give the object a negative charge we must give it more electrons, and this will increase its mass.

II. A positive charge increases an object’s mass; a negative charge decreases its mass.

III. Charge is conserved, and therefore the mass of the object will remain the same.

Here we need to comment whether the mass of the object increases, decreases or remains same when a neutral object is given a negative charge.

When a neutral object is given a negative charge, during the process an electron is added to the neutral object. Since the electron has mass,  when it is added the resultant negative charged object will have greater mass compared to the mass of the object when it was neutral.
